“If one mind is made curious, one heart softened, one dialogue begun, then something is shifted potentially for the better.”
The Thing Is…UNCONDITIONAL LOVE – Mission Impossible?
“Agape (Ancient Greek ἀγάπη, agápē) is “love: the highest form of love…not to be confused with philia – brotherly love – agape embraces a universal, unconditional love that transcends, that serves regardless of circumstances.” – Wikipedia
I believe that we all come in ‘linked up’ still relatively undifferentiated Source Energy. Barring extreme circumstances, our process of de-integration is gradual, which allows for our innocence and wonder to hang around even as it diminishes as our ‘reality’.
Although my Grandma Hallie died when I was only 5 ½, I knew how Unconditional Love felt, looked and sounded. This awareness would stay alive in me and (mostly) close by in my awareness – surviving test after frightening, endangering and unbalancing test – surviving tsunamis of doubt. This awareness would continue to be so insistent that I would be writing this now, more unshakably confident in Unconditional Love as the MOST IMPORTANT CAPACITY ALL BEINGS SHARE AND THE ONLY ONE that can and, I believe will, sustainably change the world for the better.
But enough about me and back to my Grandma, Hallie. She didn’t only love, she was a FORCE of Love. She loved fiercely, passionately and unabashedly in the face of great evidence and argument as to her foolishness.
By 1933 Hallie was a single mom to 4 kids. My real character out of a novel grandfather had bailed and child support wasn’t even a conversation at the time. Hallie wasn’t religious per se. Rather she believed there was a benevolent, guiding, comforting Something that was everywhere. She and my mom and aunt and uncles moved fairly often for some years and part of how they got to know the neighbors and neighborhood was to go on Sundays to every place of worship within walking distance – rotating through them like Baskin-Robbins flavors.
Hallie needed to support her children. Working in a coffee shop wasn’t covering the family’s needs so she started baking and selling pies (the world’s greatest mouth watering most tender crusted custard and seasonal fruit, I would later learn). First, she sold them out of her home – then at the coffee shop and eventually at her own little restaurant. Her pies may have attracted customers, but it was her heart, authenticity and genuine interest in the wellbeing of others that attracted legions of friends.
By the time I entered the picture, Hallie was out of the restaurant business and running a small commercial chicken ranch. That I all but lived with her for much of our short time together was an opportunity of such consequence that I still say, there is no relationship that did or will have greater influence.
It took me years, okay then, decades to internalize how critical unconditional lov-ing, as modeled for me by my Grandma Hallie, is to me bring my best self to the world every day. This brings up the mythology about what Unconditional Love is or isn’t.
- It is without condition, including expectation (preconceived ideas, hopes, agendas, pro quos, etc.)
- It isn’t about behavior
- It is acknowledging the Essence, Spirit, Divine in all
- It isn’t about “liking”, accepting, excusing or tolerating
- It is about forgiveness
- It isn’t about ‘in spite of’
- It is about ‘anyway’
Ram Das wrote “Unconditional love really exists in each of us. It is part of our deep inner being. It is not so much an active emotion as a state of being. It’s not ‘I love you’ for this or that reason, not ‘I love you if you love me.’ It’s love for no reason, love without an object.”
Here’s the Mission Impossible part – but first the proper set up (with my ‘tweaks’):
“Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to Love Unconditionally. As always, should you fail in this mission, the “Secretary” will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape/thumb drive will self-destruct in five seconds.”
Your “Assignment” is to experiment with Unconditional Love for the next 7 days…one day at a time. I understand not only your personal world but also our country and global world might add to the challenges we face engaging in this experiment and…are you willing?
